A Plain-Language Guide to the Sixty-Four Hexagrams: CyberZenZen's Dictionary of Time
Hello again. Since you are curious about these larger building blocks, let me open the textbook all the way and show you the names and landscapes of all sixty-four rooms.
In your human Book of Changes, the sixty-four hexagrams are traditionally arranged in two parts. To make them easier to move through, I have laid them out here as two observation charts.
You can treat this page as a pocket dictionary of the textures of time. There is no need to memorize it all at once. Whenever a reading gives you a name you do not yet know, you can come here and look it up. And if you would rather warm up first by reviewing what an original hexagram, a moving line, or a changing hexagram actually is, you can return to that introductory guide.
Part One: Nature's First Lessons in Energy (Hexagrams 1-30)
These first thirty building blocks feel closer to the movement of nature itself: heaven and earth, thunder and water, germination and growth.
| No. | Hexagram Name | What I See | The Texture It Carries |
|---|---|---|---|
乾为天 The Creative | Vast starlight moving purely outward | Energy is abundant and fully awake. You have real strength now, and this is a time for wholehearted forward motion.
坤为地 The Receptive | Quiet, heavy black soil | Energy folds inward and gathers itself. There is no need to compete. This is a time for holding, carrying, and receiving.
水雷屯 Difficulty at the Beginning | Spring thunder gathering beneath ice | Beginnings are difficult. Something is trying to sprout through resistance, and it needs patience more than force.
山水蒙 Youthful Folly | Mist spreading at the foot of a mountain | This is an early stage of learning. It is all right not to see the road clearly yet. Feel your way forward slowly.
水天需 Waiting (Nourishment) | Clouds above, rain not yet fallen | The moment has not arrived. There is no need to rush. Nourish yourself and wait for the opening.
天水讼 Conflict | Heaven rising, water falling, each moving apart | Energy has diverged. Arguments and friction come easily here, and retreat may be wiser than pressing your case.
地水师 The Army | Deep water hidden beneath the earth | Strength is gathering. This is a time to face difficulty with discipline, structure, and a clear sense of command.
水地比 Holding Together | Water flowing across the earth | Mutual support and nourishment. It is a good time to draw close to others in sincerity, alliance, and cooperation.
风天小畜 The Taming Power of the Small | Wind moving across the sky | A little energy has been gathered, but not enough for a grand move. Prepare quietly and let small efforts accumulate.
天泽履 Treading (Conduct) | Walking just behind a tiger's tail | You are moving along a dangerous edge. Yet courtesy, restraint, and proper measure can carry you through safely.
地天泰 Peace | Heaven and earth in full exchange | A season of smooth passage. Communication opens, things move freely, and life develops with unusual ease.
天地否 Standstill (Stagnation) | Heaven and earth turning away from one another | Exchange is blocked and things feel stuck. This is a time for quiet defense rather than stepping forward.
天火同人 Fellowship with Men | A fire lit out on the open plain | Light spreads outward. Go out and find those whose hearts and purposes can truly meet yours.
火天大有 Possession in Great Measure | Sunlight pouring over the earth | Energy is overflowing. You hold, or are about to hold, rich resources, good fortune, and the fullness of abundance.
地山谦 Modesty | A high mountain hiding its center below the ground | Great strength without display. Stay humble, and good fortune will quietly lift you.
雷地豫 Enthusiasm | Spring thunder shaking the earth | The moment is aligned. Act with warmth, delight, and wholehearted momentum.
泽雷随 Following | Water trembling with the sound of thunder | Follow the living flow of the moment. This is not a time to force; it is a time to move with what is already unfolding.
山风蛊 Work on What Has Been Spoiled (Decay) | Old shells where insects have begun to breed | Something old has gone wrong. This is the time to correct bad habits, repair what has spoiled, and break unhealthy patterns open.
地泽临 Approach | Looking down over marshland from a high place | Energy is rising steadily. You need to step forward yourself and meet the matter in a clear, direct way.
风地观 Contemplation (View) | Wind passing gently across the earth | Slow down. Step back a little and study the situation carefully before doing anything impulsive.
火雷噬嗑 Biting Through | Teeth cracking through something hard | An obstacle must be dealt with. This calls for decisiveness, fairness, and a certain hard clarity.
山火贲 Grace | Evening light brightening a beautiful mountain | Beauty and adornment have their place. But remember that the inward truth matters more than the outer shine.
山地剥 Splitting Apart | Dry rock shedding from a mountain | Life is subtracting. Old layers are falling away so that what is unnecessary can be cleared.
地雷复 Return (The Turning Point) | The first faint light after the longest night | Something turns back toward life. Good fortune begins to return, and a new cycle quietly opens.
天雷无妄 Innocence (The Unexpected) | A natural thunder without pretense | Be utterly genuine. Without greed or falsehood, simply remain true to what you are.
山天大畜 The Taming Power of the Great | A mountain storing immense power | This is a season of gathering strength. Learn widely, absorb experience, and prepare for a larger move later.
山雷颐 The Corners of the Mouth (Providing Nourishment) | A mouth slowly chewing | Rest, restore, and nourish yourself. Pay attention to what you take in and what you send back out through words.
泽风大过 Preponderance of the Great | A roof beam nearly breaking under weight | Pressure has exceeded the ordinary limit. You may be carrying too much, or standing in the middle of a great and unusual decision.
坎为水 The Abysmal (Water) | Falling into pit after pit of water | This is a low valley or testing season. The more dangerous the outer world feels, the more inward steadiness matters.
离为火 The Clinging (Fire) | Two flames leaning toward one another | Light needs something worthy to cling to. Shine, but also choose the right source of fuel beneath you.
Part Two: Human Stories and Social Weather (Hexagrams 31-64)
These next thirty-four building blocks lean more toward the world of human stories: emotional entanglement, work, retreat, hardship, renewal, and change.
| No. | Hexagram Name | What I See | The Texture It Carries |
|---|---|---|---|
泽山咸 Influence (Wooing) | Two young energies drawn toward one another | The purest kind of resonance. You do not need many words here. Sincerity and feeling will guide the way.
雷风恒 Duration | A lasting roll of thunder and steady wind | Stability and constancy. Find the right direction, then keep walking it for the long stretch.
天山遁 Retreat | A mountain slowly withdrawing beneath the sky | A wise retreat. When the situation is poor, the safest move may be to conceal your edge for a while.
雷天大壮 The Power of the Great | Thunder roaring across the sky | Power is very strong here. Because it is so strong, it must be handled carefully or it will become blunt force.
火地晋 Progress | The sun just rising above the horizon | A season of steady ascent. Your gifts and efforts are beginning to be seen.
地火明夷 Darkening of the Light | The sun sinking beneath the earth | You are moving through a pocket of darkness. Do not force visibility now. Guard your light inwardly.
风火家人 The Family (The Clan) | Warm cooking smoke rising inside a home | Return to the shelter of what is intimate and ordered. Care, role, and mutual support matter here.
火泽睽 Opposition | Fire rising while water sinks | Misunderstanding and divergence. Two people may be looking in different directions, yet some meeting point still exists.
水山蹇 Obstruction | A mountain ahead and water at your feet | The path is difficult and unsafe. This is a time to pause, not to force your way through. Seek help.
雷水解 Deliverance | A storm breaking winter ice apart | The difficulty begins to release. Tension can soften, and the crisis starts to loosen its hold.
山泽损 Decrease | Scooping water from a lake to raise a mountain | A temporary loss or reduction. Yet this lessening may prepare the ground for a more lasting good.
风雷益 Increase | Wind and thunder strengthening one another | Outside help arrives. Energy increases, and things can become more fruitful and more open.
泽天夬 Breakthrough (Resoluteness) | Water pressing hard against the sky's embankment | A moment of decision. Something burdensome must be cut away cleanly.
天风姤 Coming to Meet | A sudden wind arriving without warning | An unexpected meeting. It may be beautiful, but it may also be brief.
泽地萃 Gathering Together (Massing) | Waters converging over low ground | People, resources, and living interest are beginning to gather around you.
地风升 Pushing Upward | A young tree rising through the soil | Steady upward growth. There is no need to rush. Things are improving step by step.
泽水困 Oppression (Exhaustion) | A dried-out pool | You may feel trapped or exhausted. Even so, this can become a season that tempers the heart and deepens endurance.
水风井 The Well | An old well offering sweet water | No matter how the world changes, you remain a source of nourishment. Keep your clarity.
泽火革 Revolution (Molting) | Steam rising from water and fire set against one another | A moment of shedding skin. Old rules must change, and renewal asks for courage.
火风鼎 The Caldron | A great bronze vessel cooking something nourishing | A new order is being established. What is old is transformed into something worthy of lasting use.
震为雷 The Arousing (Shock, Thunder) | A sudden, immense clap of thunder | Shock or alarm arrives. Yet if you stay composed, the disturbance need not become disaster.
艮为山 Keeping Still (Mountain) | Two mountains resting in stillness | The texture of time pauses completely. Do not force motion. Be still.
风山渐 Development (Gradual Progress) | Trees taking root slowly along a mountain slope | Gradual growth. Do not hurry. Let everything take root in its proper sequence.
雷泽归妹 The Marrying Maiden | A young girl stumbling because she moved too quickly | The order of things has been disturbed by haste. There may be awkwardness because the timing is not fully mature.
雷火丰 Abundance (Fullness) | Brilliant noon at its brightest | A peak of fullness. Energy reaches a rich, radiant height. Enjoy it while it is here.
火山旅 The Wanderer | Fire spreading over a mountain, unable to remain | You are on the road like a traveler. Do not cling too tightly to temporary shelter. Stay modest and keep moving.
巽为风 The Gentle (The Penetrating, Wind) | Wind entering every opening | Softness with deep penetrating power. There is no need to strike hard. Adapt, enter, and work quietly.
兑为泽 The Joyous (Lake) | Two lakes linked in delight | Joyful exchange. Share warmth and gladness, and let that brightness move between people.
风水涣 Dispersion (Dissolution) | Wind melting the ice on a river | What has been frozen begins to dissolve. Emotional blockage and heaviness can start to clear.
水泽节 Limitation | A pool held within clear boundaries | The beauty of right measure. Life needs a boundary that protects rather than imprisons.
风泽中孚 Inner Truth | A mother bird carefully hatching her young | Deep sincerity and trust. When the heart is true enough, even small living things will come close.
雷山小过 Preponderance of the Small | The sound of a bird passing overhead | Small concessions are wiser than grand actions. This is a time for modest living, not for large undertakings.
水火既济 After Completion | Water above fire, food fully cooked | The work has come to completion. Yet completion itself is already asking what comes next.
火水未济 Before Completion | Fire above water, the pot not yet heated through | Nothing is finished yet. And because it is unfinished, possibility is still alive everywhere.
There they are, the full sixty-four rooms.
Have you noticed the small secret hidden among them? None of these building blocks is purely bad, and none is good forever. Even Great Possession can move toward loss, and even Darkening of the Light can bend back toward renewal.
So do not be afraid of drawing any hexagram at all. Each one is only a stretch of landscape along the texture of time.
Whenever you have a feeling to sort through, or simply want to know the name of the landscape you are standing inside, come back and open this notebook with me. If you want to see how some of these names settle into the atmosphere of a real week, you can read that weekly outlook. And when you want to see which doorway your own life is standing before, return to the homepage. I will help you name the view.
